Fortune Magazine published its annual Global 500 list, based on 2009 revenues data. This year Generali advanced to the 19th position (in 2009 it ranked 47th) gaining the first place among the eleven Italian companies listed in the ranking. Thanks to the brilliant outcomes recorded, Generali had a better placement than ENI (24td) and FIAT. On an industry basis, Generali is world’s second insurance company. Italy’s biggest insurance company has been busy; it restructured, expanded and went after the competition. Generali bought insurance companies in Germany and Spain, cut an investment deal with a major Italian bank, set up an asset management company in Luxembourg and even opened an office in Vietnam. While Generali certainly looked good last year (its earnings were the second highest in the industry), analysts say its stock has been underperforming by 15% this year, partly because of the Greek debt crisis. ♦ Generali Sigorta and its contribution to the FIBA games The 2010 World Basketball Championship will take place in four Turkish cities (Ankara, Kayseri, Izmir and Istanbul) between August 28th – September 12th. Balbinot, who will keep his role at Generali, said in the statement that the economic crisis "triggered a wave of regulatory reaction to which the insurance sector must respond comprehensively." The European Central Bank said earlier in June that the introduction of new risk-based capital rules for the insurance sector, known as Solvency II, from the beginning of 2013 may lead to changes in insurers' capital structure.
